SAINT LOUIS SCOTT GALLAGHER
As Megan McClure (‘98 SLSG ECNL, Webster HS, Arkansas State) celebrates being named conference defensive player of the week and breaking the all-time shutout record at Arkansas State, we are reminded of one of the SLSG’s most prized programs, that of the Goalkeepers. The goal keepers will be back on the field this evening doing position specific training, just as they are every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The Program continues to gain notoriety throughout the city, state, and region, as SLSG keepers continue to make headlines for club, high school, and college. “The goalkeeper training program is starting to see the development of our keepers through consistency of training. The girls who have been dedicated and committed to the program really are improving”, said Tim Kelly (aka ‘TK’), SLSG’s Director of Goalkeeping. “It is exciting to see how the girls are getting so much more confident in their ability over time, most starting their training program with the GK staff at ten years old, and continuing through age seventeen and eighteen.” Scott McDoniel, SLSG’s Director of Coaching, has seen a massive change in the performance of the club's keepers over the past several years. “Regardless of age and level, it is now common to walk up to a game and see SLSG goalies performing well. Keepers trust Tim’s training methods, they have obviously worked hard, and the result is visible in both team training and games. I’m really proud of our GK program and the respect it has earned over the past ten years.”
TK credits the training staff for the program's success, saying it is truly a team effort when it comes to working with the goalies. “Sam Lund, Paulo Nascimento, David Comens, Brian Woodward, and Stos Behle have worked incredibly hard to make the GK program something special for the girls. I don’t think the program makes the progress it’s made over the past several years without the passion and humility of these folks. They are becoming true professionals, they make goalkeeper training competitive and maybe most importantly, they make playing the position fun for the kids.”
